You may click on one of the links on the following pages only to find that it has been broken.  I have included many links so that in case this happens, there are many more sites you can choose from.

Combining Phonics with the Whole Language Approach to teach reading

Since I believe so strongly that reading is the KEY that opens all doors for our children, I am primarily dedicating this site to a series of links that will help promote good readers.  You will find links to various sites that deal with Sight Words, Phonics and Phonemic Awareness, and Online Stories that include audio so that the children who aren't quite reading will still be able to experience the sounds as they are applied to words.
Your Role

Will using these sites replace the role you play in helping your child learn to read?  ABSOLUTELY NOT.  They should be thought of as a valuable resource only.  There is nothing that can replace the one-on-one interaction that occurs between parent and child when reading together.

When Should You Begin Reading to Your Child?

In my opinion, you should begin reading to them while they are still in the womb.  Once they arrive, ideally they should be read to on a daily basis.  Before naps and bedtime are especially enjoyable times for children and this is a prime time to strengthen the bond between parent and child.  I once sent a few little toys and books to my oldest grandson who was only 2 at the time.  My daughter put him on speakerphone so that I could hear his reaction as he saw his surprises.  Upon viewing a toy he asked his mother what it was in a rather subdued manner but when he saw a book he said with much excitement in his voice, "Look Mom, a book."  As he saw more books he exclaimed, "Look Mom, more books."  This child has been read to since before his birth and he gets to select 5 books to have read to him before he goes to bed.  Is it any wonder that he prefers books to toys and television?
